Comment
On interpretation of the name, see Łajtar 2009b, pp. 101–102: Browne translated the phrase ⲁⲓ̈ ⲕⲁⲡⲉⲛⲏ ⳦ⲉ ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲛ̄ ⲁⲥⲧⲗ̄ⲗⲟ as follows: 'I, Kapene, daughter of the priest Makari'. If he is right, this would be the only instance of a female scribe in Makuria. Moreover, thy only other attestation of the name seems to belong to a man (Ref 701739). While Browne's interpretation cannot be totally excluded, given the relatively high status of women in Makuria, according to Łajtar, two other interpretations are more correct here: either 'I, Kapeni, priest, asti of Makari' (Makari being a toponym) or 'I, Kapeni, asti of priest Makari'.
