Meaning: μεγάλη, 'big, great (f.)'.
The name Megale is known from Egypt (Nam 40081), but there it is a female name. Here we are undoubtedly dealing with a male name, as it is borne by an eparch. Moreover, the only two occurrences of the name in Egypt are dated to the 4th cent. AD. We are therefore most probably dealing not with adopting the name as such, but rather using the normal adjective as an anthroponym. The feminine form of the word attests again to the poor recognition of grammatical gender in Greek by Nubian-speakers.
