Meaning: 'defender, protector of man'.
Inspiration: A few Egyptian saints are known under this name including a martyr under Decian and a 4th-century bishop of Alexandria, but it is uncertain which one, if any, was the inspiration for the use of the name in Nubia.
Meaning: 'the cloud of the Lord'.
Inspiration: Although a saint bishop from Thebaid is known by that name, here the inspiration comes most probably from one of the three Youths from the Book of Daniel martyred in fiery furnace.
Meaning: 'full of grace'.
Inspiration: mother of Virgin Mary.
The name is originally feminine, but at least one Nubian example belongs to a woman, showing than it was most probably unisex in the Middle Nile Valley.
Meaning: perhaps variant of Archippos, 'master of horses'.
The name Archippos cannot be found in Greek documents after the 2nd century AD and it is not attested in Coptic texts.
This is most probably an Egyptianised variant of the Greek name Daphnis, rendered as Tȝpns in Demotic (cf. Ref 702975 for the female version of the name).
