It is uncertain whether the whole phrase ⲁⲕⲇⲉⲥⲕⲟⲗⳟⲁ should be understood as one anthroponym Akdeskolnga (thus Łajtar) or as a patronymic, 'son of Akdeskol'. Notably, the meaning of the phrase remains the same in both cases.
The name derives from the first letter of the Greek alphabet, but here was probably used under the inspiration of the figure of Jesus Christ, who is styled 'the alpha and omega', 'the beginnig and the end' (Rev. 21:6, 22:13). Both letters are frequently accompanying painted representations of Jesus in Nubia.
It may also refer to the numeral 'one' as a designation of a first-born child.
