Comment
This is the reading presented by Till in CPR 4 28; Krall read ⲡⲁⲩⲗⲟⲥ ⲕⲟⲗⲗⲁ in his edition. Unfortunately, the ink is badly obliterated in this place and does not allow a secure reading. In any case, either reading seems to me quite unlikely. Because all other persons listed in the protocol seem to designated by some epithets, we should expect an epithet before the name of the eparch of Nobadia too. This epithet could end with -ⲟⲥ, which can be more or less recognised on the photo. What precedes the endig is much more difficult: where Krall read ⲡⲁⲩⲗ and Till ⲁⲣⲓⲗ I can see traces of a quite large beta and a long letter before it (iota or rho?). I, however, fail to recognise any known epithet or honorific title. As for the second part of the phrase, I fail to see an omikron on the photo (it was doubtful for Till too), but instead of the first lambda, read securely by both editors, I see an alpha. It seems to me unreasonable, too, to consider the three letters ⲡⲣⲉ after the supposed ⲕⲟⲗⲗⲁ as the abbreviation for presbuteros (as proposed by Till), as no eparch of Nobadia is known to have been a cleric, as far as we know. Instead, I would treat the letters as an integral part of the name. The proposed reading would, therefore, be ⲕⲁⲗⲁⲡⲣⲉ. Such a name is unattested, indeed, just like Kolla, but it may be connected with the ⲕⲁⲗⲁⲡⲏⲥⲓⲟⲥ known from Coptic and Greek Egyptian sources.
